Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities FY 2011 Service Expectations


On May 3, City Council adopted a $531.6 million General Fund Operating Budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, an increase of 0.3% from FY 2010. Despite challenging economic conditions, the goal of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities is to maintain its core services. As costs continue to increase in providing core services to residents, some service adjustments have been made.

First Annual Youth Arts Festival


The First Annual Youth Arts Festival, designed for youth and families, is scheduled for Saturday, August 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jefferson-Houston Elementary School Park at 1501 Cameron St. This fun filled, cultural enriching, and completely engaging festival features live performances, puppet theatre, fine art displays, interactive workshops, poetry readings and opportunities for youth to sell their art.

Ad Hoc Fort Ward Park & Museum Area Stakeholder Advisory Group


The City of Alexandria's Ad Hoc Fort Ward Park and Museum Area Stakeholder Advisory Group will advise City staff on Fort Ward Park and Museum use and management. The ten members of the group were appointed by the City Manager in October 2009 based on their commitment to a balanced, multi-use park and historic site in the City, and are representative of the diversity of interests and uses of the park and museum site.

Alexandria 'Mini' Pools Now Open on Weekends


Cool off every weekend at the City's Neighborhood "Mini" Pools! Both John Ewald Pool (4500 Duke St.) and The Memorial Pool at the Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe St.) are now open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Fight the Bite!


The Alexandria Health Department reports that mosquito collections in 4200 block of Eisenhower Ave, the Cameron Knoll Community, and Angel Park have tested positive for the West Nile Virus. This is the first reported activity of the virus in Alexandria this season. Fight the bite! Watch a video and learn more about how to eliminate mosquito breeding areas around your home.

Jones Point Park Reconstruction


Construction improvements are scheduled to begin at Jones Point Park later this year. To maintain public safety during construction, access to some portions of the park will be temporarily or intermittently closed while improvements are being made.

King Street Paving Project


The City will begin resurfacing King Street starting July 12, between Columbus Street and the King Street Metro. The first phase of work will be curb and gutter repairs and new ADA accessible ramps at crosswalks. The work is scheduled weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. over the next eight weeks.
